The decision comes amid renewed political demands for broader consultations over Karnataka’s push for the Mekedatu dam project.
State Minister C. T. R. Nirmal Kumar said the Assembly had already passed a resolution after detailed discussions, with support from parties across the political spectrum. He argued that another all-party meeting would serve little purpose, as the government’s position on protecting Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water remains unchanged.
The political debate has intensified after Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar reiterated that the proposed Mekedatu project is a long-term solution for managing Cauvery water resources.
Tamil Nadu, however, maintains that the project could reduce downstream water availability and adversely affect farmers who depend on the river for irrigation.
While opposition parties continue to seek stronger political engagement on the issue, the Tamil Nadu government has indicated it will pursue legal and institutional avenues through the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and other appropriate forums rather than holding another all-party consultation.
Officials insist the state’s priority remains safeguarding Tamil Nadu’s water rights in accordance with existing tribunal awards and Supreme Court directions.
