Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called on the United States to focus on speeding up artificial intelligence (AI) development rather than introducing stricter regulations, arguing that excessive rules could slow innovation and weaken the country’s competitive edge against rivals such as China.

In a recent interview and opinion piece, Zuckerberg said the US should invest in building stronger AI capabilities instead of restricting access to advanced AI models. He warned that overregulation could concentrate power in the hands of a few large companies and limit opportunities for developers, researchers and startups.

The Meta chief also opposed efforts to block Chinese open-source AI models, saying such measures would do little to strengthen America’s position in the global AI race. Instead, he urged policymakers to identify weaknesses in the US AI ecosystem and encourage broader innovation.

Zuckerberg believes AI will create new jobs and improve productivity across industries, rejecting concerns that the technology will primarily eliminate employment.

He highlighted AI’s potential to transform education, healthcare, cybersecurity and scientific research while giving individuals more powerful digital tools.

His remarks come as governments worldwide debate how to regulate increasingly powerful AI systems while maintaining innovation and national competitiveness.

Meta continues to invest heavily in AI infrastructure and open AI models as it seeks to remain one of the industry’s leading players.
