A numerical slip by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during a Lok Sabha debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread discussion and political reactions.
While criticising the Centre over recurring examination paper leaks and the treatment of protesting students, Priyanka Gandhi appeared to say that “700 crore students” had been affected. The remark quickly drew attention online as the figure far exceeds India’s population of about 140 crore and is close to the world’s population.
Clips of the speech were widely shared, with social media users describing it as an apparent verbal slip.
During her speech, Priyanka Gandhi accused the government of failing to protect students from repeated examination irregularities and questioned the police action against protesters. She also asked whether the Centre viewed students as “terrorists” for demanding accountability over paper leaks.
Political observers noted that the remark may have been an unintended error. In recent speeches on the same issue, Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly claimed that 7.5 crore students were affected by paper leaks over the past decade, suggesting Priyanka Gandhi may have inadvertently misstated the figure.
Neither Priyanka Gandhi nor the Congress had issued a clarification on the remark at the time of writing. While the numerical error dominated online conversations, the broader parliamentary debate remained focused on examination integrity, paper leak prevention and the government’s handling of student protests.
