Samsung Bets on a New Generation of AI Memory as the Race for Faster Computing Accelerates

For years, the conversation around artificial intelligence has revolved around smarter chatbots, powerful language models and increasingly capable AI assistants. But behind every breakthrough lies a less visible technology that determines how quickly those systems can process information: memory.

That is where Samsung Electronics believes the next major battle will be fought.
At the Future of Memory and Storage (FMS) 2026 conference in California, the South Korean technology giant unveiled a new generation of AI-focused memory technologies designed to meet the growing demands of data centres, cloud computing and future AI applications.

While processors often receive most of the attention, Samsung argues that memory has become just as critical as computing power in determining how efficiently artificial intelligence operates.
The centrepiece of the announcement was V10 Bonding V-NAND (BV-NAND), Samsung’s latest flash memory architecture featuring more than 400 layers.

According to the company, the technology delivers higher storage density, improved performance and lower power consumption compared with previous generations three qualities that are becoming increasingly important as AI models grow larger and more complex.
Samsung also offered a glimpse into the future by introducing experimental technologies known as zHBM and zNAND-O.

Both are designed to reduce the time it takes for processors to access data, helping AI systems analyse information more quickly while using less energy. Although these technologies are still under development, they illustrate where the semiconductor industry is heading as companies compete to build the infrastructure behind next-generation artificial intelligence.

The announcement comes at a time when demand for AI hardware is expanding rapidly. Cloud providers, enterprise software companies and chipmakers are investing billions of dollars to build faster and more efficient computing systems capable of supporting increasingly sophisticated AI workloads.

As a result, memory manufacturers such as Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron are no longer operating quietly in the background they have become central players in one of the technology industry’s fastest-moving races.

For consumers, the impact may not be immediately visible. But the hardware being developed today is expected to power tomorrow’s AI-powered smartphones, autonomous vehicles, cloud services and personal computing devices.Faster memory means AI applications that respond more quickly, consume less energy and process larger amounts of information without compromising performance.

Samsung’s latest announcement is therefore about far more than a new memory chip. It reflects a broader shift in the AI industry, where the focus is expanding beyond software to the hardware that makes intelligent systems possible.

As the next wave of AI innovation takes shape, memory technology is emerging as one of the industry’s most strategic battlegrounds.
